MY SUMMERHAY(E)S FAMILY

My Summerhay(e)s family link is by way of my maternal 2 x Great Grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Summerhays, the 3rd child of John and Elizabeth (nee Hudson).

From Sarah, I've traced my Summerhay(e)s ancestry back to my 9 x Great Grandfather, Robert Summerhays (c1628-?), who married Jane Summerhays. They had 6 offspring including my 8 x Great Grandfather, Richard.

My 8 x Great Grandfather was Richard Summerhays, who married Elizabeth Summerhays on 28th November 1689 at Gotleigh, Devon. They had 4 children including my 7 x Great Grandfather, Robert Summerhays.

My 7 x Great Grandfather was Robert Summerhays. Robert married Mary Turner on 11th November 1718 in Stockland, Devon and they had 10 children. Their son William (c1735-1811) was my 6 x Great Grandfather.

My 6 x Great Grandfather,William Summerhays was baptised at Stockland, Devon on 11th June 1735. He married Mary Moor on 27th December 1756 in Stockland, Devon and they had 6 children. Joseph (c1758-?), their 2nd eldest child, was my 5 x Great Grandfather.

Joseph Summerhays, my 5 x Great Grandfather, was baptised with his twin Mary on 15th September 1758 in Stockland, Devon. He married Mary Edwards in 1779 in Stockland, Devon and they had 4 children including my 4 x Great Grandfather, John (c1780-1821).

My 4 x Great Grandfather, John Summerhays, was baptised on 13th July 1780 at Stockland, Devon. He married Mary ? c1805 and they had 4 children, including John (1810-?), my 3 x Great Grandfather.

John senior was a Stone Mason by trade and moved to Pimlico, London in the early years of the 19th century.

Due to the early passing away of their parents (1803-1805), John had the care of his younger brother Caleb and, according to Joseph William Summerhays, Caleb's son, "gave him shelter but proved to be rather cold-hearted and tyrannical....so much so that it was all the young child could do to stay at his home". Caleb Summerhays converted to Mormonism in its early days in England and his branch of the family later emigrated to the United States and formed a Mormon dynasty/became pillars of the Mormon Church there.

John died in 1821 and was buried at St George's Hanover Square, London on 16th September.

My 3 x Great Grandfather, John Summerhays junior, was born on 20th June 1810 in Pimlico, London and baptised on 22nd July at St. George's, Hanover Square. He married Elizabeth Hudson on 13th April 1831 at St. Mary's, Lambeth, Surrey. John and Elizabeth had 6 children, including my 2 x Great Grandmother Sarah Elizabeth (1836-1875). The family lived at various addresses in Causton Street, Pimlico, in the shadow of the Millbank Prison, for 30 years or more.

Sarah Elizabeth Summerhays, my 2 x Great Grandmother, was born in Pimlico, London and baptised at St. Margaret's, Westminster on 8th May 1836. She married Thomas Kaley on 17th March 1852 at St. John's, Waterloo.
