Ambrose Rampling, a Woolcomber, who was born c1787 in Norwich, Norfolk and died in 1869 in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, was my paternal 4 x Great Grandfather. In my research I've found numerous references to this wonderfully rustic-sounding name in various records of births, deaths and marriages from 1722 to 1876. It's obvious from the range of dates that the references can't all be to the same person but the combination of christian name and surname and the re-occurring locations, Bury St. Edmunds and Norwich, leads me to believe that the different Ambroses may all be related and that the name was handed down from generation to generation. The problem is working out which Ambrose is which. The tree below attempts to rationalise the recorded events. I haven't yet found the baptism records of any of the 4 Ambrose's (their approximate birth dates are calculated from their ages given at death). The records of baptisms of the second, third and fourth Ambrose (indicating who their parents were) are key to proving the tree. The baptism of the first Ambrose is key to pushing the tree any further back.
