My paternal 4 x Great Grandparents, Thomas Kentleton and his wife Mary (nee Covenay), were both born in Ireland, according to the 1851 Census of England and Wales. They arrived in England between 1824 (when their son John (my 3 x Great Grandfather) was born in Ireland) and August 1825 (when their son William was baptised at St. James, Westminster, London). They may have been joining family already resident in the parish - a Daniel Kentleton and Elizabeth Burroughs were married at St. James on 2nd December 1822. Daniel and Elizabeth's son, Edward, was baptised at St. James on 13th May 1824 and their children continued to be baptised at St. James until 1840.
By August 1831, when their son Thomas Daniel was baptised, Thomas and Mary were apparently living in Chelsea, where their children continued to be baptised until c1846.
My Kentleton line continues from Irish-born John, the eldest son of Thomas and Mary, to his eldest daughter, Henrietta Mary, who married Arthur Middleton in 1869 at St. Simon's, Chelsea.
The name “Kentleton” seems to be very uncommon in both Ireland and England. There are only 15 individuals with the name in the 1881 census of England and Wales, all of whom resided in London and are related to one or other of the families mentioned above i.e. Daniel & Elizabeth in Westminster and Thomas & Mary in Chelsea. In all the various lists of Irish surnames I’ve come across on the Internet, the name “Kentleton” does not appear. Note:-In the 1851 Census, Daniel's place of birth is given as Armagh, Ireland (in 1791). An initial, cursory search of Armagh birth/baptism records has not found him.
(There is a family story that the Kentleton name originated from a ship from Ireland that sank off Liverpool. So the story goes, a baby boy survived and was found and given the ship's name as his surname.)
