GEORGE ALEY COBB (c.1857-1926) - Master Butcher

ABSTRACT OF WILL

I, GEORGE ALEY COBB, of Woodside Garston in the County of Herts hereby revoke all former Wills and other testamentary dispositions made by me and declare this to be my last Will.

I appoint my wife Fanny Elizabeth, my son George and my friend Charles Frederick Slater of Forth House, Norbury, Surrey (Surveyor) to be EXECUTORS AND TRUSTEES of this my Will.

Pecuniary Legacies

Fanny Elizabeth Cobb (wife) - £500

Charles Frederick Slater (executor) - £200

Alice Geary (cousin) - £500

Thomas Dennis (employee) - £500

Arthur Green (gardener) - £100

Amos Farley (coachman) - £100

Thomas Ebbs (chauffeur) - £100

William Crofts (late shopman) - £100

To my wife

All my household furniture, plate, plated articles, jewels, watches, chains, trinkets, linen, china, glass, pictures, prints, musical instruments, wines, liquors, provisions and other household and personal effects. Such of my horses, carriages, harness and motor cars as she may select and desire to retain for her own use.

The yearly sum of £200, during her life, to issue as a rent charge out of my freehold land with the shop and flats erected thereon at Sloane Street, Knightsbridge, Middlesex.

The income of my residuary trust estate, subject to the annual sums payable to my son, Arthur Savile, and daughters Mabel Fanny and Ethel Emma.

To my son George

I devise my freehold hereditaments and premise situate and being "Woodside" Garston to my trusteees upon trust to offer to my son George the option of purchasing at the price of £10,000 subject to him permitting my wife (and such children as may wish to reside with her) to reside there during her lifetime.

I devise my freehold hereditaments and premise situate and being Woodside Farm, Leavesden to my trusteees upon trust to offer to my son George the option of purchasing at the price of £4,000

Whereas I have given to my son George the businesses of a Butcher formerly carried on by me at 52 Kings Road, Chelsea and Sloane Street, Knightsbridge and all the goodwill of the said businesses and stock in trade, fixtures and effects and whereas my son Arthur Savile is employed by my son George in the carrying on of the businesses and whereas it is my desire that after my decease my son George should give to my son Arthur Savile the business carried on by him at 52 Kings Road, Chelsea and which during my lifetime he has expressed his willingness to do, Now therefore I devise my Sloane Street property unto my son George..

To my son Arthur Savile

Out of the income of my residuary trust estate, a yearly sum of £400.

After the death of my wife, a sum of £15,000.

..it is my desire that after my decease my son George should give to my son Arthur Savile the business carried on by him at 52 Kings Road, Chelsea. If my son George shall not give the said business to my son Arthur Savile, I then give to my son Arthur Savile the yearly sum of £600 during his life, to issue as a further rent charge out of my Sloane Street property.

To my daughters Mabel Fanny and Ethel Emma

Out of the income of my residuary trust estate, whilst they remain spinsters and reside with my wife, a yearly sum of £200 each.

If they marry or cease to reside with my wife during her lifetime, a yearly sum of £350 each.

After the death of my wife, a sum of £15,000 each to be held upon trust.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have set my hand this sixteenth day of October one thousand nine hundred and nineteen - George A. Cobb - in the presence of A. Douglas Robinson, Solicitor 37 Lincolns Inn Fields, Alfred Osborne Clerk to Messrs. T.J. Robinson & Son, Solicitors 37 Lincolns Inn Fields.

1st CODICIL (23rd March 1921)

Arthur Douglas Robinson to replace Charles Frederick Slater deceased as Executor of my will.

Witnessed by Florence Swain, Housemaid, "Woodside", Garston and Alice E. Kinch, Cook, "Woodside", Garston.

2ND CODICIL (10th February 1923)

1) The sum of £15000 left to my daughter Mabel Fanny in trust to be reduced to £12000, £3000 having been given to her since the making of my will.

2) Additional Pecuniary Legacies

On the 23rd March 1926 Probate of this Will was granted to George Cobb and Arthur Douglas Robinson the surviving Executors.
